Results of routine testing of organic food for agro-chemical residues
This report was presented at the UK Organic Research 2002 Conference. Consumers expect organic foods to be free of agro-chemical residues. Organix Brands plc. routinely test organic food ingredients for agrochemical residues using independent test laboratories. In the past year 243 batches of ingredients were tested and low levels of agro-chemical residues were found in 21% of samples. These residues can arise in organic food through environmental contamination, processing contamination or even the fraudulent use of agro-chemicals on organic food. Food containing agro-chemical residues can enter the organic system because of limitations in the organic rule
Is the response of output to monetary policy asymmetric? evidence from a regime-switching coefficients model
This paper investigates regime switching in the response of U.S. output to a monetary policy action. We find substantial, statistically significant, time variation in this response, and that this time variation corresponds to "high response" and "low response" regimes. We then investigate whether the timing of the regime shifts are consistent with three particular manifestations of asymmetry by modeling the transition probabilities governing the switching process as a function of state variables. We find strong evidence that the regime shifts can be explained by whether the economy is in a recession at the time the policy action was taken. In particular, policy actions taken during recessions seem to have larger effects than those taken during expansions. We find much less evidence of any asymmetry related to the direction or size of the policy action. (Formerly titled: "When Does Monetary Policy Matter? Evidence from an Unobserved Components Model with regime Switching")Monetary policy ; Business cycles
Complementarity in Wormhole Chromodynamics
The electric charge of a wormhole mouth and the magnetic flux ``linked'' by
the wormhole are non-commuting observables, and so cannot be simultaneously
diagonalized. We use this observation to resolve some puzzles in wormhole
electrodynamics and chromodynamics. Specifically, we analyze the color electric
field that results when a colored object traverses a wormhole, and we discuss
the measurement of the wormhole charge and flux using Aharonov-Bohm
interference effects. We suggest that wormhole mouths may obey conventional
quantum statistics, contrary to a recent proposal by Strominger.Comment: 12 pages and 2 figures, phyzzx, CALT-68-188
